Something about the North East

The North East of England includes the counties of Northumberland, Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Cleveland.

The North East is noted for the richness of its natural beauty and it also has great historic importance. Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England.

Famous for

Hadrian’s Wall, built in 122 AD, is the largest free-standing structure in Britain. 73 miles long and up to 20 feet high, it has weathered almost 2000 years of Border battles and awestruck visitors to become a truly breathtaking World Heritage Site.

Durham Cathedral, the World Heritage Site, is regarded as the finest Norman building in Europe. It is the burial place of both St Cuthbert (a great northern saint) and the Venerable Bede (author of the first English history).

Northumberland National Park is the England's most tranquil place, whose dramatic hills and sheltered valleys stretch from Hadrian's Wall to the Scottish border.
